Scoring & Scholarships

Participant scores are confidentially provided by individual judges for the various competition disciplines and tabulated by an independent auditor, with whom the results are kept until the final announcements are made. All scores remain the property of Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Incorporated and are NOT provided to participants. The overall winner (titleholder) is named based on their performance in the below categories.

PUBLIC SPEAKING20%All participants will present a speech at a public speaking competition to be held during the conference weekend. Speeches MUST be prepared in advance, and should be no longer than 75 seconds. The use of notes is not recommended, but is permitted. Participants will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate empathy and a realistic understanding of their chosen topic.YES
ACADEMICS15%During the conference weekend, participants are required to write an opinion-based essay which will be evaluated on structure, content, and ideas supporting your personal opinion. TOPICS ARE NOT PROVIDED IN ADVANCE.YES
HEALTH & WELLNESS10%Participants are required to write a well structured paragraph during the conference weekend, sharing their best practices for healthy living and overall wellness.YES
ON-STAGE BIO PRESENTATION5%During the Leadership Awards Show, participants will share a short bio about themselves. A bio template will be provided in advance of the conference weekend.NO

The above scores are totaled for each participant to determine the Top 10, each of whom will be asked an impromptu question on stage as the Leadership Awards Show, for an opportunity to earn another 10%. The impromptus are general questions based on your own personal experiences. the impromptu question scores are then added to the accumulated totals to determine the 2nd Runner-up, 1st Runner-up and Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador. Scholarships are awarded to the Top 3 participants.

SCHOLARSHIPDESCRIPTION
FUTURE LEADERThis award recognizes a program participant who has faced obstacles and despite these challenges continues to excel. The winner is selected by the Main Panel Interview Judges.
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITYThis award recognizes the contributions made to volunteer work. It is not necessary to have any set number of volunteer hours to qualify. The winner will have many positive characteristics, including innovation, inspiration and influence. Volunteer work information included on participant applications is reviewed by a team of experienced judges. Participation in this award is OPTIONAL and not counted towards a participant’s overall score.
TALENTED TEENParticipants compete in a performing art that can be easily adapted to the theatre stage. Some examples include dancing, singing, acting, or playing a musical instrument Participation in this competition is OPTIONAL and not counted towards a participant’s overall score. 
SPIRIT OF GIVINGThis award is presented to the participant who raises the most money for Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador, in the four weeks leading up to the conference weekend. Participation in this award is OPTIONAL.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESSThis award is an OPTIONAL essay competition completed during the weekend, which recognizes contributions made toward the protection, conservation and improvement of the environment. This essay is opinion based and will be written at the same time as the academic essay during the conference weekend.
INSPIRING KINDNESSThis award is inspired by the vision of a kinder world and is named in honor of the late Mary Shute of Harbour Grace, who was an inspiring leader in her community. The award is chosen by participants and organizational staff to recognize the individual whose actions have had a positive impact on their peers throughout the conference weekend.
PHYSICAL FITNESSParticipants will complete a physical fitness test conducted by qualified fitness instructors and physical education teachers. This competition is OPTIONAL and is held during the conference weekend.

Scholarship amounts are determined annually based on sponsorships.
